About the History Project
The Carroll County History Project is an ongoing, multi-part effort to preserve the history of Carroll County, Maryland by collecting videotaped memories of people who have lived here and by producing a series of documentary programs about the county.

The online archive Carroll County Remembers and the special collection, Carroll County: Through the Eyes of the Black Experience, contain video clips of residents that can be viewed on this website. The CMC intends to make these memories permanently available for generations to come.

The first documentary, Carroll County's Legacy, is an in-depth television program created by MPT producer and resident Marilyn Maguire-Phillips. Carroll County's Legacy explores the rich heritage of the area and the many characteristics that make Carroll County unique.

The Carroll County History Project was developed by the Community Media Center, Carroll County Public Library, Carroll County NAACP, Human Relations Commission of Carroll County, Historical Society of Carroll County, and the Carroll County Genealogical Society.

Rural Mail Delivery - Westminster, MD - August 22, 1903

This is a video taken by movie crew of Thomas Edison. It represents the first rural mail route in the United States, in Carroll County, Maryland. Notice that the horse halts at the mail stop and proceeds, on his own, as soon as the mail carrier gets back in the van to begin sorting the mail.
