Sussing out the Carroll County lacrosse championships

The spring season is winding down so it's time to see if the county titles have been secured.

It's been a while, hope you didn't miss me.

And it's hard to believe the 2024 spring sports regular season is coming to an end. The regional playoffs are set to begin in 2 weeks, jeez!

Anyway, before we get there I figured it was time to check in with boys lacrosse and girls lacrosse to find out which teams, if any, have wrapped up Carroll County Athletic League titles.

Boys Lacrosse

The county championship came down to Monday, April 22 with some huge matchups. We had Winters Mill at Westminster and Century at Liberty.

Both games lived up to their rivalry hype -- the Knights clipped the Lions 8-7, with Brad Brown netting the game-winner for Century, and the Owls held off the Falcons 10-9 behind 4 goals and 4 assists from Jack Hitchcock.

So, Century's CCAL record is 5-1 and the Knights are done with county foes. And since they defeated Westminster head to head, the own the tiebreaker and clinch the county title.

It's the third in four seasons for Century.

The Owls can finish 5-1 in county play if they beat South Carroll on May 3 at Parker Field.

Winters Mill can get to 4-2 by beating Francis Scott Key on April 24.

Girls Lacrosse

Once again, April 22 was a big day in the girls lax county race. Liberty visited Century for a game with championship implications.

The Knights took down the Lions 11-5 behind 5 goals from Delaney Sandbank and 3 goals from Natalie Opatovsky. Century kept itself alive for a potential share of the county crown.

But the next big game is set for May 2 when Liberty hosts Manchester Valley. The Mavericks are 5-0 in the county and can clinch the outright title by beating the Lions.

If Liberty wins, it create a 3-way tie for the county crown -- Century, Liberty, and Man Valley would all be 5-1 with wins against each other.

CMSportsNet will be at the Lions Den on May 2 for that big game. It's our Game of the Week broadcast, so stay tuned for more information in the coming days!
